Copal - gold/natural stem
Copal is a tree resin traditionally used as an incense and often called the frankincense of the Americas due to its role as the premier aromatic resin of the region, with comparable historical importance in trade and religion.
Its name comes from the Nahuatl word for incense, copalli.
Copal was highly sought after by the Mayans and Aztecs, who burned it as an offering to the gods.
Used by indigenous people of Mexico and Central America in sweat lodge ceremonies, Copal is also important in Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) rituals as there is a long held belief that Copal smoke can travel between this world and the Otherworld to facilitate communication with spirits and help guide the departed back home.
Devonshire Incense is absolutely extraordinary and unlike any other incense in the world. Our unique incense making process infuses each aloeswood wand with natural tree resins, giving each of them an exquisite fragrance and almost unheard-of 1 hour burn time.
The incense has a shelf life of over 15 years, can be stored in anything, and will never transfer fragrance from stick to stick.
We source the highest quality tree resins from small businesses around the world. Then we hand-crack and painstakingly distill these resins to bring out the very purest resin fragrance solution and hand-blend it with exotic, high quality oils and herbs according to our exact family recipes.
Devonshire Incense was handcrafted by the Hershberger family, makers of Eye of The Day incense and Sacred Spirit incense, in Texas from 1967 until 2012 when Keridwyn moved her family and the Devonshire home base to rural Wisconsin.
In 2024, Keridwyn moved to the United Kingdom to concentrate on growing her new business, Wandering Moon Retreats, passing on the Devonshire family business to Roxanne and Araris Dresden.
Currently, the Devonshire tradition is being carried on by Roxanne and Araris out of their home workshop in Michigan.
In addition to Eye of the Day, and Sacred Spirit, Devonshire has been marketed under the names Fragrant Harvest, White Light, Lightstones, Devonshire Apothecary, Wicks and Sticks, Linga Sharira, and was sold through Whole Foods Market during the 1980s and ’90s. Devonshire is also the only North American incense company to have sold to Vatican City.
